My journey towards police and prison abolition (a world where harm is rare, community needs are met, and the legacies and systems of chattel slavery are removed) is an ongoing one. For me, abolition is not an identity, but an approach and a practice, that encourages us to imagine, then enact upon, a world where this vision is possible.
It is an active choice and a lens through which we are able to navigate a city, a country, a world rooted in anti-Blackness, patriarchy, capitalism and imperialism. I call myself a student of abolition because I’m still navigating my own capacity for harm, greed, and apathy towards the people I love. I recognize how easy it is to replicate the ideas and practices we’ve been taught, especially when they go unquestioned. So I try, and fail, and try again, to operate in a spirit of care, accountability, and community to support the building a world that actively centers and liberates the most marginalized of us.
